A shopper has six gift boxes in their cart and six people to send them to. Shopify's checkout asks for one shipping address. The shopper can place six separate orders, ship everything to themselves and re-mail it, or email your store and ask for help.
For a corporate buyer, the same problem arrives as a spreadsheet with 200 names and a delivery date. October is when those spreadsheets start landing. A store that can turn the list into orders in minutes heads into December with far less manual work than a store retyping each row.
Shopify's checkout takes one shipping address per order
Merchants keep asking how to let customers send gifts to several addresses from a single checkout.
If you've already searched for a solution and read through the Shopify Community discussions, you'll soon realize that Shopify's checkout collects one shipping address per order.
What Shopify offers:
Split shipping divides an order into multiple shipments when items come from different locations or shipping profiles. Every shipment still goes to the customer's one address. Check Shopify's split shipping guide.
Multiple saved addresses let staff keep several locations on one customer profile. Each order still ships to one of them.
They are helpful, but it doesn't solve the issue of sending to multiple addresses for gifting brands.
The workarounds stores use
Stores that get multi-recipient requests without a dedicated tool usually fall back on one of four workarounds. Each one hands the extra work to the customer or to your team.
The customer places one order per recipient
This works for two or three gifts. At ten recipients, the shopper enters their payment details ten times and may well give up partway through. Volume discounts and free shipping thresholds also apply to each small order instead of the whole send.
Your team enters draft orders by hand
The customer emails a list, and someone on your team creates an order for each recipient. This is one of the most frequent challenges we hear on calls at Send To Many, because manual draft orders pile into a backlog during the weeks the team is busiest.
The spreadsheets add their own problems. Souren, founder of Fastachi, has seen customer lists put first and last names in one column, then in two, with a second office contact squeezed into an address line. Some import tools reject the whole file when one row is wrong. This means the manual work multiply.
The list goes straight into a shipping app
Some teams skip Shopify and upload the list to ShipStation to print labels. Félix & Norton, the Montreal cookie brand, did this before they used a multi-recipient app, Send to Many, back when their gifts only shipped overnight. The labels print, but the recipient orders never exist in Shopify, so customer service can't look up a recipient's order or tracking in the store. Read how Félix & Norton moved those orders into Shopify in the Félix & Norton case study.
A custom-built tool
Larger brands sometimes build their own. Goode Company, the Houston restaurant group known for its pecan pies, had a custom upload tool before switching to Send To Many. In the first year after the switch, they had fewer resends from bad addresses, and their reps spent less time working around glitches and freezes in the custom build. The Goode Company case study covers how they made the switch.
What to check before you choose a multiship Shopify app
Shopify can't take multi-recipient orders on its own, so brands that sell gifts need an app to handle them. Once a store starts getting lists of 100 or more recipients, the apps differ most on these points.
Address validation on bulk lists. Autocomplete helps a shopper typing one address. A 300-row spreadsheet needs every address checked and corrected before any order is created.
Shipping rates per recipient. Each recipient order should carry its own calculated shipping, so the gifter sees the real total before paying.
Gift messages and delivery dates per recipient. Look for a date picker that blocks the days you don't ship.
Discounts and inventory. Confirm that your discount codes and volume tiers work, and that inventory is checked across the whole send before checkout.
Bundles. Most gifting brands sell gift boxes and build-your-own bundles, so check that bundled products can go to each recipient. Send To Many works with Biscuits Bundles, a Shopify bundle builder, so a gifter can build a box and send it to every name on the list.
How pricing is counted. Some apps price on your total store order volume, and others count only multi-recipient orders. If gifting is a small share of your sales, the difference adds up.
Subscriptions. Multi-address orders generally can't include subscription products. This comes from how Shopify handles these orders, so it applies across apps.
Support in November. Ask whether the developer will get on a call during your peak week.
How Send To Many adds multi-address checkout and gifting flow to Shopify
Send To Many gives gifters two ways in, because stores with a corporate gifting business usually need both.
Storefront multi-address checkout lets the shopper add recipients in the cart, assign products to each one, add gift messages and delivery dates, and pay once. It suits personal gifters and smaller corporate sends of 5 to 50 people. Learn more about multi-address checkout.
Spreadsheet upload in the admin lets your team take the customer's file, map its columns, assign products, validate addresses, and generate the orders. This is how lists of hundreds or thousands of recipients get processed. Goode Company handles gift orders of that size, from customers who send a list of their best clients or employees and ask for a pie to reach each one. Learn more about bulk order import with CSV.
A third path, an inquiry form, suits buyers who want to talk through a large order before committing. The form captures the request, the buyer sends their list, and your team processes it through the upload. Some corporate buyers prefer this path, so it's worth offering alongside checkout. Learn more about inquiry form.

Where the recipient orders end up
Send To Many generates one Shopify order per recipient, plus a parent order that ties the whole send together. Each recipient order flows through the fulfillment, inventory, discounts and reports your team already uses. You can click through it in the Send To Many demo of checkout and recipient orders.
Orders your team creates through bulk order upload in the Shopify admin land the same way. Customer service can look up any recipient's order and tracking in Shopify, and nobody re-enters orders in a second system. Some other apps cancel the original checkout and re-create it as child orders, and some gifting platforms keep orders in a separate portal that syncs back to Shopify.
Put the multi-address option where shoppers decide
A multi-address checkout helps only if shoppers find it before they place six separate orders. Where it goes depends on how your cart works.
If add to cart opens a drawer, add a "Send to multiple addresses" button under the checkout button.
If shoppers click through to a cart page, add a single or multiple recipients toggle at the top of the cart.
If add to cart goes straight to checkout, add a "Sending to multiple people?" note near the add to cart button on product pages.
Add a Gifting item to your main navigation, linking to a page that explains every way to order. Cam's test for this: put on your customer hat and count how many seconds it takes to learn whether your store can take a 100-recipient order. The gifting journey guide walks through each placement in more detail.
Get ready for this year's multi-address orders
Before your first corporate spreadsheet arrives, time how long your team takes to turn a 100-recipient list into Shopify orders. If the answer is more than five minutes, that's the workflow to fix first.
Send To Many helps you deliver an amazing journey to your gifting customers, whether they're sending to 2 or 2,000 recipients. With multi-recipient checkout and spreadsheet upload inside Shopify, every recipient order runs through the fulfillment process your team already uses.
